Jewelry and Your Renters Insurance

Next time you lift the lid of your jewelry box, take a few moments to consider the value of all the rings, necklaces and other precious adornments you’ve accumulated over the years. Leaving aside the sentimental value of your jewelry, you may be pleasantly surprised at how much your jewelry is worth in dollar terms, but please don’t assume that it is automatically covered by your renters insurance in CT.

A standard home insurance policy provides a limited level of coverage for high value personal possessions like jewelry and watches. The insurance policy specifies the limit of the insurer’s liability, and no more than the specified amount will be paid out if there is a claim. With most home insurance policies the liability limit is relatively low, typically around $1,000 to $2,000. If you have some valuable jewelry items you may need to take out a separate “floater” policy.

A separate “floater” policy that increases coverage for your jewelry and may also provide protection for a broader range of risks than those included in standard home insurance policies. For example, a “floater” policy may protect you for accidental loss of jewelry outside the home, which may not be provided by standard home insurance coverage.

The fond memories and family history attached to your jewelry are irreplaceable, but the dollar value of your jewelry makes it attractive to thieves. Adequate renters insurance at least takes some of the sting out of a loss.
